Lumpectomy that removes at least one quadrant of the breast often leaves a deformity that is significant after treatment. In these instances, your oncologic surgeon will most likely recommend you discuss your options with Dr. Fine for reconstruction after lumpectomy.
Reconstruction after lumpectomy has the potential to change the shape or size of the breast. In some cases, women who have lumpectomy will chose to have surgery for symmetry on the opposite breast. This is less common with endoscopic latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction as this procedure essentially restores the native shape of the breast, but may be more applicable when oncologic breast surgery is performed or when implants are used to reconstruct the breast. Implant reconstruction after lumpectomy has the highest likelihood to create a less natural appearing breast with more upper pole fullness and roundness. Although less natural, it is not necessarily undesirable as many women prefer the shape of a rounder fuller breast. These decisions will be discussed in length with your surgeon at your consultation prior to proceeding with surgery.
Please add the following section: Expected Recovery- Most surgeries for reconstruction after lumpectomy are performed as an outpatient surgery 1-2 weeks after lumpectomy and prior to the initiation of radiation therapy. Recovery is usually minimal, around 1 week.
