We all look in the mirror on a daily basis, but many of us are not content with the reflection staring back at us. Aging is a natural process, however, many people experience a drastic decrease in self-confidence as they age due to changes out of their control. Thankfully, there are tools at your fingertips to help you restore your natural beauty and your self-confidence. Just because you are growing older does not mean you have to look older!
Many of the visible signs of facial aging are due to the loss of volume and elasticity that comes with the natural breakdown of collagen. Chicago patients of Northwestern Specialists in Plastic Surgery, S.C. (NSPS) can achieve beautiful, natural-looking correction of wrinkles, lines, and folds by replacing lost volume with injectable dermal fillers. At our plastic surgery practice in Chicago, lost collagen can be replaced with any of the major dermal fillers, including RESTYLANE® Injectable Gel.
What is Restylane
This product is composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that can be found in the body normally, and provides volume and binds moisture beneath the skin. There is very little risk of allergic reaction with RESTYLANE, as it is completely biocompatible and biodegradable. RESTYLANE® is harmlessly eliminated by the body over 6 to 9 months.
What Is Restylane Used For?
RESTYLANE® is typically used for treating lines and folds on the face, particularly the tear trough region which contributes to the look of dark circles under the eyes. This product is composed of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance that can be found in the body normally, and provides volume and binds moisture beneath the skin. One of our skilled clinicians will disinfect the treatment area and then use a fine needle or a blunt micro-cannula to help fill wrinkles or add volume. Rest assured that the majority of patients only report feeling mildly uncomfortable, especially because many Restylane products contain a local anesthetic. The treatment itself does not take long, approximately 15-45 minutes depending on the area that is being treated. Possible side effects include swelling, bruising, pain or tenderness at the injection site, but they typically disappear within a week.
Types of Restylane
- Restylane – Restylane is the product that started it all. It’s used to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds). Restylane can be applied to any facial area.
- Restylane Silk – Restylane Silk is the first FDA-approved product specifically designed to treat parts of the face that need more delicate contouring. It is compromised of a gel that is smaller and smoother than other Restylane products, resulting in a softer, more precise result – ideal for restoring and enhancing the lips.
- Restylane LYFT – Restylane LYFT is approved to fill the area around the mid-face. It also treats moderate to severe facial folds, such as the nasolabial folds (smile lines). Restylane Lyft is the first and only FDA-approved filler with the ability to provide fullness to the cheeks, as well as restore lost volume in the midface area. Lyft offers more support and longevity and can last up to 18 months
