There are many variations both in the design of the incisions and the technique itself. In some instances, it may be possible to avoid an incision around the navel. When the amount of loose skin is minimal and the excess fat deposits are located below the navel, a lower incision is all that is necessary. This procedure is called a partial, or “mini,” tummy tuck. This may be enough for some moms! Sometimes liposuction may be used alone, or in conjunction with a tummy tuck, to remove abdominal fat.

A tummy tuck may be performed on an outpatient basis. If this is the case, be sure to arrange for someone to drive you home after surgery and to stay with you for at least the next day or two. When tummy tuck surgery is performed in conjunction with medically necessary procedures such as hysterectomy or hernia repair, a short hospitalization may be required. You may be permitted to go home after a few hours, unless you and your surgeon have determined that you will stay in the hospital or surgical facility overnight.

Recovery from a mommy makeover begins in the surgery center with a qualified nursing staff overseeing patient wellness as the anesthesia wears off. The nursing staff ensures that, as the effects of anesthesia diminish, appropriate measures for pain management are taken. At home, healing continues for approximately 14 days with the use of medication to manage comfort. In addition to oral pain medication, patients may also be prescribed muscle relaxants to offset the tightness that is felt after abdominoplasty. Many patients stop their prescription medications within the first week, and some return to work (light duty) within two weeks of their makeover. Heavy lifting and more rigorous activity should not be resumed until cleared by the surgeon.

There is no rush to get back to a regular routine. The primary focus of recovery is to rest as much as needed to enable the body to heal fully.

If breast implants are involved in the mommy makeover, gentle breast massage may also begin during the recovery phase of treatment. Patients will also wear compression garments to control swelling and discomfort.
