How Long After A Hair Transplant Do Grafts Become Secure?

It takes 5-10 days for your grafts to become secure after your hair transplants. It’s very important that you take care of your graft while they heal.

Generally, after a hair transplant, newly implanted grafts take around 5-10 days to become secure. If you’ve had an FUE hair transplant in Chicago or are considering it, you’ve probably wondered how long it takes for the hair grafts to get secure. Read on to understand the basics of modern hair transplant procedures.

Hair Transplant- Meaning

During an FUE hair transplant, follicular units are removed from the donor area of the scalp or body and transplanted to the recipient area (recipient area). If you’re suffering from hair loss, you may need a crown hair transplant (also known as a mid-scalp transplant or a frontal hairline transplant).

Relocated hairs should continue to grow for the rest of one’s life. As a result, hair transplantation is viewed as a long-term remedy for balding problems. Male pattern baldness, usually caused by a combination of hereditary and hormonal factors (androgenetic alopecia), can be reversed by a hair transplant.

A hair transplant surgeon performs hair transplants under local anesthesia. In terms of hair restoration in Chicago, you’re most likely to use either Follicular unit transplantation (FUT) or Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). After making an incision and closing it, FUT involves taking a portion of back hair, dividing it into parts, and implanting them in the bald spot.

To remove follicles straight from the back of your head, your surgeon makes several small punch incisions and then implants them in tiny holes in the bald region. This technique is known as FUE. FUE hair transplants are less intrusive, less painful, and time-consuming than FUT hair transplants.

Hair Grafts

First, let us clarify the term “hair graft” for you if you’re still not sure what it means. Hair grafts are used by surgeons to extract healthy hair follicles and transplant them to balding regions of the head. Hence, a hair graft is a small piece of skin that includes healthy hair follicles and is transferred to bald areas on the scalp. For the most part, posterior scalp hair transplants are obtained from this part of the head.

Hair grafts can potentially be taken from any place on your body. One graft usually produces two to three hairs. Groups of hairs can typically be seen emerging from a single graft in the skin on the scalp, arm, or other parts of your body. The size of a hair graft is usually based on the surgical procedure, tools, and technology employed to get the hair graft.

How Is Hair Graft Used During Surgery

Individual hair follicles are harvested from the back of the head using hundreds or even thousands of tiny punch incisions to harvest hair transplants. Afterward, they are put in a chilly, hydrating solution. Hair grafts are transplanted into balding areas after they’ve been harvested in sufficient numbers from donor areas. Tiny holes on the scalp are used to implant the grafts to fill up bald spots. Bandages are applied to the donor region or the back of the scalp once the grafts have been successfully implanted.

How Long Before The Grafts Become Secure

Many factors, including dehydration, oxygen deprivation, and temperature, can shorten the lifespan of hair transplants and reduce their viability. To keep your grafts in good condition, you should follow your surgeon’s advice. Each new graft is delicate in its new place, much like a plant that has been repotted. For the graft to “root-in,” it may take some time. During these 5-10 days, the scalp is allowed to recover from the procedure and the grafts are secure in their new locations.

After a hair replacement in Chicago, you may be instructed to avoid activity for at least two weeks and maybe one month to minimize redness and keep sweat from contaminating the delicate regions. To protect the grafts, you should avoid touching them for the first two weeks after the procedure has been completed. The hair grafts should be secured enough by the fifth day to allow you to wash gently without touching the hair.

Important Tips to Care for Hair Grafts Following a Hair Transplantation Procedure

Taking care of your hair grafts after a hair transplant is crucial to their long-term viability. The following are some things to do and things to avoid.

Things to do

  • In the first several days following surgery, you should spray your grafts with a saltwater solution to keep them moist.
  • To speed up the healing process and eliminate scabs, wash your hair every day for the first five days following the operation.
  • After the surgery, you should wear a cap to protect your hair transplants for about two weeks.
  • Use over-the-counter analgesics and sleep aids in the days following the operation to alleviate pain and allow you to sleep.

Things to Avoid

  • In the first 5-10 days following a hair transplant, avoid strenuous physical activity since the hair follicles may not have fully recovered.
  • Keep your implanted grafts out of the way, whether you’re taking a shower or getting your hair done.
  • Don’t comb your hair using a cloth towel. Instead, let it air-dry.
  • Scratching or rubbing your scalp can lead to hair loss.
  • Don’t expose your newly transplanted hair to direct sunlight for at least two weeks after.
  • For at least three months following a hair transplant, avoid any form of scalp surgery or therapy.

How Long Does a Hair Transplant Take To Heal?

Several factors can affect recovery time. The best and quickest results will be achieved if you adhere to your surgeon’s post-operative instructions and follow-up care recommendations.

When it comes to hair transplants, it’s essential to know how long it takes to recover from both the donor area and the scalp.

Scalp: With an FUE hair transplant surgery, the scalp often heals quicker than a FUT treatment. The surgical region generally recovers within two weeks. During this period, you should strictly adhere to the surgeon’s instructions on keeping your scalp free of debris and bacteria.

Donor Site: For the FUE surgery, the surgeon makes small incisions around each follicle and extracts them separately. Since the incisions are so small, donor area healing time is only five to seven days.

I've lived in Chicago for 20 years, and have visited a handful of different med spas and have been under the care of a couple of other plastice surgeons in the Chciago Metro area. However, no experience was as wonderful as mine with Dr. Simon at Northwestern. I've lost and gained quite a bit of weight over the last 15 years or so and decided to have chin lipo, and couldn't be happier. I feel and look amazing, and will not go back to another Doctor now. His PA MoniKa is equally as lovely, and caring as Dr. Moradian himself. I would recommend Dr. Moradian, his staff, and his practice to everyone I know!

Five stars is not enough. I came to Dr. Moradian for an upper bleph - my results were phenomenal. I didn't want to look surprised or crazy; I wanted to look like I got a good night's sleep. And that is exactly what he delivered. He and NSPS also went the extra mile to make sure I was comfortable. Dr. Moradian is truly a talented surgeon and I was lucky to find him.

I visited Dr Fine and his team after a failed breast reconstruction after being treated for cancer with mastectomy, chemo and radiation. From the first visit, there were noticeable differences between my prior surgeon and him. He and his team are empathetic and make their patients feel at ease and cared for. At each visit, he and his team have spent a lot of time with me. The visits never feel rushed. At my first visit, he looked at my infected reconstructed breast with an exposed implant and calmly explained what was necessary to fix it. He then explained the procedure he thought would be helpful and showed me before and after pictures of patients who had undergone the suggested surgery. The end result was gorgeous, by the way, in all of these pictures---even in post radiation patients. In this visit alone, he spent more time with me than my prior surgeon had spent with me over multiple visits. He answered all my very detailed questions. In my first visit with my prior surgeon, before my mastectomy, my husband and I were left alone in an exam room for about an hour with a saline-filled implant and silicone-filled implant on the counter to look at. The surgeon I went to before spent about 20 minutes with me in that visit and did not go into detail. The choices presented to me were implant reconstruction with saline- or silicone-filled implants or an abdominal flap procedure that takes 2-4 months to recover from. I am very career-oriented and don't have 2 months to take off of work. Dr Fine, on the other hand, gave me the option of a latissimus dorsi flap with a significantly shorter recovery time, lower complication rate, and better aesthetic result. He gives you his honest opinion based on 30 years of experience. He tells you the hard truths: such as that 50% of implant reconstructions fail after radiation therapy. I wish I would have known that before I started on this journey because I would have made very different choices. The icing on the cake was when he took out the infected implant in his office, which makes a woman feel really terrible and ugly and scared, and his very kind PA told me I have beautiful eyes. Wow. What a caring team.

Dr. Moradian performed an incredible job! He’s one of the sweetest and compassionate doctors/surgeons I’ve ever encountered. He made me feel incredibly comfortable and relieved, putting all my anxieties to rest. I underwent a transaxillary breast augmentation, and I’m thrilled with the results. All of my friends and family are blown away by my outcome. I have a new sense of confidence that has changed my life. While I was in my recovery room, Dr. Moradian not only took care of me but also spoke to my family and answered all their questions. He exudes a sense of safety and ensures that you receive the best possible outcomes. He took the time to personally check up on me and kindly encouraged me to reach out to him. Dr. Moradian genuinely cares about your concerns and takes the time to explain everything in detail. I am so fortunate to have found him!
