What is Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)?

An image of a woman's eyes that is outlined and prepped for eyelid surgery The eyes and the structures that surround them are oftentimes the most expressive and revealing facial features. Our emotions and how we feel physically can be conveyed through the eyes. As we age, the structures of the eyelid region can change; excess, drooping skin can make you appear sad or angry, or puffiness and bags can cause you to appear tired. Eyelid surgery can correct excess skin, tissue, and fat to reveal a more youthful appearing eye.

Upper Eyelid Surgery:

Blepharoplasty, depending on your goals, can be performed on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. If desired, this procedure can also be combined with other cosmetic procedures to accomplish the desired results.

Droopy upper eyelids can be corrected with an incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid. Through this incision, fat can be repositioned, muscles and tissue can be tightened, and excess skin can be removed to create a firmer upper eyelid contour.

Lower Eyelid Surgery:

The incision is made just under the lower eyelid or just below the lower lash line. Through this incision, fat can be redistributed, muscles tightened, and excess skin removed. In certain cases, diminished lower eyelid support can be corrected with canthopexy or canthoplasty.

What is the Recovery from Eyelid Surgery?

After blepharoplasty, your surgeon may advise you to apply lubricating drops and cold compresses to aid healing. Typically, patients return to work in a few days, but exercise and strenuous activities should be avoided for two weeks.

Your surgeon will remove your stitches after 3 or 4 days. Swelling usually subsides within a couple of weeks. If you wear contact lenses, you should not wear them for 2 weeks after surgery, as well as eye makeup. We advise that you wear dark sunglasses when you are outside or in the sun for 2 weeks for protection.

What can i expect after eyelid surgery?

After eyelid surgery, you can expect to have some mild bruising and swelling since the eyelids have relatively thin skin and can be more sensitive. The bruising and swelling typically lasts 1-2 weeks, and should improve with time. You may have a pinkish tone to the incision site, which will fade to a thin, white line over time. Eyelid procedures are very easily camouflaged with the use of eye glasses/sunglasses. You may experience sensitivity to light and your eyes may be slightly drier than usual. This will be alleviated with the use of artificial tears, and will subside after your initial healing period.
