Breast Implant Removal: What You Should Know

The choice to have breast augmentation is momentous. When a woman chooses to enhance her shape with breast implants, she often believes “this is it.” She intends to live by this decision for many years. Seeing that breast implant removal is a relatively common plastic surgery performed today, we know this to be an inaccurate impression. If you have breast implants and are considering having them removed or are just now considering getting breast implants for the first time, there are things you should know about revision surgery.

  1. Breast implant revision is chosen for a variety of reasons.

Just as there are many reasons a woman may choose to get breast implants, there are several reasons for wanting to have implants removed. The decision is personal to every patient and none is more relevant than another. Some women choose to have breast implants removed to correct a complication such as capsular contracture or a leak. Some may switch from saline to silicone, and some may switch from one size to another.

  1. You can choose to remove implants altogether.

Some women believe that, if they remove one set of breast implants, they must have a new set inserted in their place. This isn’t true. Many women today are choosing to return to their natural breast tissue. This process can work but may need some help from a breast lift. The purpose of a lift is to trim skin that has become loose and saggy. In so doing, the natural breast mound is given a new envelop of support. The result is a natural breast shape that looks perky and firm. A breast lift can also restore nipple position and projection.

  1. Recovery time is needed.

Revision breast surgery, whether breast implants are removed or replaced, is taxing on the body. You can expect to feel sore or tender. You will need to wear a compression garment and limit some of your normal activities. You need at least a few days off work (your surgeon may recommend that you take two weeks off depending on the kind of work you do). You may need to curtail your exercise habits for up to four weeks. If you do not have a breast lift, your skin may take several months to return to optimal tightness.
