To achieve the best results after your hair transplant surgery, you’ll need to invest in both long and short-term care, but caring for your hair doesn’t have to be complicated.
To start, you’ll need to wash your hair with a special shampoo and avoid using products for the first 10 days after surgery. You’ll also need to be gentle with your scalp and sleep with your head elevated to encourage the healing process. After you’ve recovered, you’ll simply need to follow the best practices for hair care.
During your consultation, your doctor will take the time to discuss your individualized recovery plan, including any specific steps you’ll need to take during this time. Additionally, for the first 10 days of recovery, we’ll send you a detailed video each morning explaining how to care for your hair that day.
When it comes to your hair transplant recovery, our doctors want you to have all of the tools you need for success.
Basic Hair Health
Once you’ve recovered from a traditional FUE procedure, your hair may still be slightly dry and brittle. To avoid this side effect, we often recommend Northwestern’s PUE™ procedure to our patients. With PUE™, we can transplant individual hairs with their oil glands intact, meaning dryness is not a concern.
If you had a traditional FUE procedure done and you are experiencing hair dryness, we recommend using a light shampoo paired with a heavy conditioner. This will help add moisture back into your hair. After showering, you may want to use an oil-containing hair product, such as a pomade. This will help prevent more oil from being stripped from your hair.
Supplementing your diet with basic nutrients like biotin and collagen is another good way to boost your hair health.
Hair Maintenance
Hair loss is a progressive process. Therefore, hair maintenance will be a crucial part of helping you maintain natural-looking results A hair maintenance program is recommended for most patients who complete a hair transplantation procedure. This type of program will supplement your hair health and help you achieve the exact results you’re looking for.
Around 3 weeks post-procedure, you can start these maintenance therapies, including prescriptions and laser cap treatment. To learn more about your hair maintenance therapy options, simply speak to one of our Northwestern hair specialists.
