A common question is how much hair am I going to lose in my life? Now, this is a relatively difficult question to answer, but there are some things we can do to get a good hint to the future.
Number one is looking at your family history. How does your father look? In particular, how does your mother’s father look? By looking at those two people, you can get an idea of where you might be headed in the future.
However, that’s not always the case. So the second thing you want to look at is actually yourself. What kind of pattern of hair loss do you have now? How old are you, and how fast is this progressing? If you’re in your 20s and you’re seeing lots of regression in your temples and then your crown, you can say that you’re progressing a lot faster than someone who’s 50 and just has a little bit of regression in their temples.
Number three is getting advice from a hair transplant specialist. In our office, we use trichoscopy or magnified view of the hairs to actually determine if we see evidence of miniaturization. What is miniaturization? Miniaturization is the process where testosterone binds the hairs and makes them thinner and thinner over time.
Now, this thinning process doesn’t just appear out of nowhere. It actually [inaudible] the course of years. And with this technology, we can see evidence of hair loss that is happening today, but you just can’t see with your eyes. In looking for miniaturization across your scalp, we can tend to map out how much hair loss you’re going to have in the future.
