Excess fatty tissue is a problem for many people. Usually, we hear about the frustration of persistent pockets of fat on relatively discreet areas of the body. For example, people express concern about fat on their hips, flanks, and abdomen. While we may not hear about it quite as much, double chin fat is also a common problem. Stubborn fat beneath the chin can be especially frustrating because there is no way to hide it, unlike fat on other parts of the body. If you’ve grown tired of seeing extra fat under your chin, now is a great time to explore how to get rid of a double chin by seeing a plastic surgeon. Don’t worry, there are nonsurgical options to consider.
Today, there are two proven treatments available to get rid of double chin fat. We help our patients do this with Kybella and liposuction. Neither is necessarily better than the other. The choice comes down to preference, which means you need to know details about each option.
Kybella Injectable Double Chin Treatment
Kybella is the only injectable solution for submental fullness that is currently available. This solution works by inserting the chemical deoxycholic acid into the layer of subcutaneous fat beneath the chin. Deoxycholic acid breaks down fat; that is its primary job in the digestive process. When injected into a localized area, the chemical dismantles fat cells so they get metabolized.
What you should know: Kybella gets rid of fat for good. The body flushes dissolved cellular debris through the lymph. There is no downtime needed to recover. However, significant swelling can be expected after injections. This can last up to 5 days but subsides a little every day. For this reason, some patients like to schedule treatment before the weekend.
Liposuction Treatment for the Double Chin
Liposuction is often sought when someone wants to sculpt a larger part of their body, like their abdomen. However, this technique is also very effective in smaller areas like the chin and neck. Liposuction is a minor procedure that is often performed with a local anesthetic and mild sedative. Patients return home shortly after their surgery and may maintain comfort with over-the-counter pain medication. Liposuction works by extracting fat cells through a small, hollow tube. This requires one or more tiny incisions that are expected to fade nicely over time.
What you should know: Chin liposuction causes some degree of swelling and bruising. A compression strap may be recommended for a few days to help minimize these side effects. Patients may also be advised to sleep with their head slightly elevated to prevent fluid accumulation that could worsen swelling. Within 5 to 7 days, most patients can resume normal activities.
