One of the biggest problems with aging is that we sometimes don’t feel like we look like ourselves. Yes, there are remnants of our telltale facial characteristics; our nose will always be our nose, with than hint of familial charm. Other parts of the face, though, like our eyes, may change so significantly that our appearance feels like it doesn’t reflect who we really are anymore. Aging eyes don’t just look older, they look tired. That’s the problem. When tissue becomes loose and saggy on the upper or lower eyelids, hooding and puffiness can diminish our true vitality, at least outwardly. While the age-related changes that affect the eyes are problematic, it is not a huge challenge to correct them. The only obstacles are those lingering questions in your mind.
Am I Old Enough for Blepharoplasty?
When people begin thinking about cosmetic surgery to address age-related concerns, they often question whether they are the right age. Blepharoplasty is an eyelid lift that adjusts fatty tissue and trims skin that has become loose and droopy. This is a relatively minor procedure but is still a lift, which leaves some people feeling as though they should wait longer to undergo surgery. Statistics indicate that many blepharoplasty procedures are performed on patients in their forties. At this time, the skin has enough elasticity left to retain the improvements achieved for several years. This doesn’t mean there is a right age during one’s forties for blepharoplasty; the procedure is also beneficial for people in their fifties, sixties, and beyond.
What about Scars?
Surgery means scars. This is true. However, it doesn’t have to mean noticeable scars. Scarring occurs in relation to the thickness of the skin. A scar on the back would have the potential to be thicker and more noticeable than a scar on the eyelid because of the thickness of the skin. The eyelids have some of the thinnest skin on the body. Therefore, scars that result from blepharoplasty (in the natural crease of the upper eyelid) should not be seen unless you’re purposely pointing them out.
