Kybella® is the first approved non-surgical treatment that contours and approves the appearance of fat under the chin. Kybella is deoxycholic acid, a naturally-occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath your chin, Kybella® causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. Sub-mental fullness, sometimes referred to as “double chin”, is a common yet under-treated facial aesthetic condition. It can impact both men and women, and can be influenced by aging, genetics and weight gain, and is often resistant to diet and exercise alone.
Kybella is a breakthrough drug that was approved by the FDA on April 29th, 2015. Although Kybella is only approved by the FDA for the chin, we frequently find ways to safely use the product off label in the cosmetic aesthetics world. One example of using an injectable off label is using Juvederm to fill in the lips, when it is only FDA approved for nasolabial folds. With that being said, Kybella’s not only limited to fat under the chin, there’s a new off label use that has ladies lining up. We are now using it to treat the inner thigh. You’ll need at least four sessions no less than one month apart for each session, using 1 vial per thigh, to get optimal results. This is a great solution for patients who are not ready for liposuction, the cost can be less than liposuction and the pain and downtime is significantly less!
